Amouage has added two new compositions to its Exceptional Extraits: Decision 42 and Overture 41. Both return to recent house signatures, but neither is simply the original formula with less alcohol. Quentin Bisch rebuilds Decision around sharper spice, rectified pine tar and a warmer resinous base, while Annick Ménardo gives Overture Woman a more expansive Calvados-and-rose center supported by Sandalwood Drèches, vanilla and patchouli.
The numbers describe their perfume-oil concentrations: 42% for Decision 42 and 41% for Overture 41. Amouage places concentrations from 40% to 56% in its Extrait de Parfum tier, above the house’s 15%–35% Eau de Parfum range. Both new releases are aged for six weeks, but their formulas and maturation schedules are tuned individually.
The quick verdict: Decision 42 is the colder, smokier and more confrontational of the pair; Overture 41 is warmer, more theatrical and centered on boozy fruit, saffron, rose, sandalwood and leather. Choose by scent direction—not by the one-point difference in concentration.

What makes an Amouage Exceptional Extrait?
Higher concentration is the obvious headline, but Amouage treats concentration and time as connected creative tools. More perfume oil does not automatically mean a fragrance projects farther or simply lasts in direct proportion to the percentage. It can change texture, evaporation, contrast and the relative volume of individual materials. The perfumer may then rebalance the formula so the extrait expresses a different side of the original idea.
That is exactly what happens here. Decision moves from a notably concentrated 33% Eau de Parfum to 42%, gains an additional week of ageing and adds several materials. Overture Woman makes an even greater leap from 25% to 41%, while keeping the total ageing period at six weeks but redistributing the schedule toward longer maturation.
The result is best understood as two revised compositions, not two “beast mode” strength upgrades. Their note pyramids reveal where each perfumer chose to apply the extra weight.
Decision 42: the lightning strike gets darker
The original Decision imagined a juniper tree struck by lightning: a moment of destruction that becomes a choice between collapse and deeper life. Quentin Bisch’s 2025 Eau de Parfum translated that story into bright cardamom and bergamot, mineralic frankincense, juniper, myrrh, cedar, patchouli and vanilla.
Decision 42 makes the flash sharper and the scorched landscape more tangible. Neroli and cinnamon join pink pepper, bergamot and cardamom in the opening. The heart retains frankincense, juniper and myrrh, but adds sandalwood and rectified pine tar. Labdanum joins patchouli, cedarwood and vanilla in the base.

On paper, the added neroli should intensify the bright electric contrast, while cinnamon brings heat into the initial strike. Pine tar is the decisive change: smoky, phenolic and forest-like, it makes the wounded tree more literal. Sandalwood can smooth the heart’s rougher edges, and labdanum supplies ambery depth beneath the familiar vanilla and woods.
Amouage also describes juniper in combination with Javanol, patchouli and rectified pine tar, aiming for a darker and more far-reaching effect. Javanol is a powerful modern sandalwood material, which helps explain why the official pyramid lists sandalwood even as the campaign emphasizes a distinctly contemporary woody force.

Owners of the original should not expect an entirely unrelated fragrance. The backbone remains recognizable. The extrait appears designed to move Decision’s most dramatic contrast—the brilliant flash against a dark tree line—closer to the foreground.

Overture 41: the understudy becomes the diva
Overture Woman has always been theatrical. Annick Ménardo’s original was inspired by an understudy suddenly called upon to replace the Grand Diva—a moment of fear, ambition and transformation expressed through Calvados, saffron, rose, resins and leather.
At 41%, the new composition changes more than scale. Frankincense moves into an opening of saffron, Calvados and cinnamon. Benzoin, Rose Centifolia and geranium remain central, while myrrh gives way to Sandalwood Drèches. Vanilla and patchouli enter the base beside labdanum and leather.

The opening should feel immediately warmer and more ceremonial than a conventional fruity-boozy accord. Frankincense supplies lift and mineral smoke, saffron adds leathery spice, and cinnamon magnifies the glow of Calvados. The heart then places rose between benzoin’s balsamic sweetness and the smooth woodiness of Sandalwood Drèches.
That material is produced through a precise re-distillation process using upcycled sandalwood chips. Rather than simply adding generic creaminess, it is intended to give the rose greater weight, texture and authority. Vanilla and patchouli deepen the base, while labdanum and leather preserve the original fragrance’s dramatic amber character.

Overture 41 is therefore the more transformative extrait on paper. The sixteen-point concentration increase is substantial, and the formula reorganizes the original’s smoke and spice around rose, sandalwood, vanilla and patchouli. Devotees of Overture Woman should sample rather than assume the 41 is merely a denser refill of the same experience.

Decision 42 or Overture 41: which should you choose?
- Choose Decision 42 if you want juniper, frankincense, mineral brightness, charred woods and forest smoke.
- Choose Overture 41 if you want Calvados, saffron, rose, balsamic warmth, sandalwood and leather.
- For the sharper opening: Decision 42’s bergamot, neroli, pepper and cardamom.

Both profiles suggest cool-weather, evening and special-occasion use, but that is an editorial inference from their materials rather than a restriction. The concentration numbers also should not replace a skin test: a 42% extrait is not automatically “better” than a 41% extrait, and the interaction between formula, skin and application matters more than a single percentage.

Decision 42 and Overture 41 launched through Amouage boutiques and the house’s online store on September 1, 2026. Both are offered in 100 ml bottles. Pricing and stock vary by market.

Final verdict
Decision 42 and Overture 41 show why Amouage’s best extraits are more interesting than simple concentration exercises. Each perfumer returns to a familiar narrative and changes the moment of maximum tension. Decision’s lightning strike becomes hotter and its forest darker. Overture’s understudy no longer waits in the wings; rose, Calvados and leather take center stage with greater polish and authority.
Decision 42 looks like the more direct extension of its original, while Overture 41 appears to be the more extensive re-composition. In both cases, sampling remains essential—the most meaningful question is not which number is higher, but which transformation feels worth revisiting.
