What is Rochas Moustache EDP a dupe of?
Rochas Moustache EDP is a clone of Yves Saint Laurent Tuxedo EDP. The connection is that dressed-up mix of pepper, rose, patchouli and warm sweetness. It makes sense as a way into the Tuxedo style, though there are enough differences that we wouldn't call the two interchangeable.
We rate the similarity at 82%. That's a useful resemblance, especially if you like the overall idea of Tuxedo. If there's one particular detail of the YSL you love, though, it's worth checking that detail rather than buying on the percentage alone.
Where the notes line up
Moustache starts with mandarin and pink pepper, puts Bulgarian rose alongside Atlas cedar, and builds its base around patchouli and benzoin. That gives the comparison a clear starting point: spice, a floral middle and a warm, woody foundation.
Tuxedo takes a different route. Its catalog notes include violet leaf, bergamot and coriander, followed by rose, lily of the valley and black pepper. Patchouli, Bourbon vanilla and ambergris make up the base. Rose and patchouli connect the two directly; pink pepper versus black pepper and benzoin versus vanilla help explain why they aren't exact copies.
The note panels make those differences easy to spot. They also show why calling Moustache simply a vanilla fragrance misses part of the picture: benzoin is the sweet resin listed in its base, with cedar and patchouli giving it a woody side.
Which one makes more sense?
We'd consider Moustache if the appeal is a spicy, warm fragrance for dinners, evenings or getting a little more dressed up. Choose Tuxedo if you already know its particular balance is what you want. Liking the alternative and wanting the original can both be true.
Check the EDP label before ordering. Moustache EDT is a separate fragrance, and this comparison is with Tuxedo EDP, not Tuxedo Extrait. Compare bottle sizes and the retailer listings on each product card before deciding on value.
